History of Horseshoes

The organized competitive playing of horseshoes in the United States gained popularity in the early 20th century.

Women's participation in these competitions likely followed closely behind, although on a smaller and less formalized scale initially. The National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA), the governing body for the sport in the U.S., was formed in 1926.

The inclusion of women in official tournaments and the establishment of women's divisions within these competitions would have become more common as the sport grew in organization and popularity.

The first Women's World Championship in horseshoes was held in 1940, indicating that by this time, women's participation in the sport was recognized on a competitive and organized level.

Since then, women have been an integral part of horseshoe pitching competitions, with many leagues and tournaments featuring women's divisions.
